Salsa & Mambo Video Reviews

Edie 'SalsaFreak' & Al 'Liquid Silver'

Cool Moves - Millenium Style

Level: Int-Adv

Style: LA

Content: Figures

General Comment: Two of the world most famous dancers, giving a typical LA twist to their moves. Plenty of suggestions for style, good details on lead and follow. Some figures are nice, others are standard LA ideas. You will like the video if you like flashy stuff, to impress your salsa friends.

(Edie's World Famous) Spins

Level: Int-Adv

Style: LA

Content: Spinning technique

General Comment: This is a good video. Edie has a well deserved international reputation as 'spinning' star and it is good to learn her trick directly from the source. The video is simple, no slow motions, no curious camera angles; just a simple view of Edie showing her stuff and describing it at the same time. You will not learn any ballet-based theory, but what Edie has learnt by experience and how she has adapted for her personal style. Surely it works for her. At times a bit too talkative, you will find some good hints to use while practicing and on the floor, as well as some amusing stories. All turn are shown both in solo and in partnering with the help of Al.

Men's Spins

Level: Int-Adv

Style: LA

Content: Spinning technique

General Comment: Spins are spins, whether performed by a lady or by a man. So I suppose this video is more about Al showing and explaining his technique. Also, he puts some Hip Hop favor as well as some pure Hip Hop turns which make the video interesting. The explanations are good and contains a few good tips. I like Al in this video, probably more than in any other. He is a good dancer and his spinning technique is good. Probably this video is more technical than Edie's spinning one, and surely the two complement each other very well.

LA Style Salsa Hip Hop shines

Level: Int-Adv

Style: LA

Content: Salsa and Hip Hop Shines

General Comment: Have you ever thought of using Hip-Hop moves in Salsa. then watch Al "Liquid Silver" doing it. He is cool, he is fun and he is an amazing dancer! In this video "Liquid Silver" teaches how to do "regular" salsa shines and then demonstrates how to convert Hip-Hop moves to Salsa. Initially the shines are not very difficult, however gradually they become more fleshy and complex. I found Hip-Hop moves the most difficult, but they are very cool. Do not miss this video if you are looking for a real challenge and of course fun.

Ladies Styling & Partnering Techniques

Level: Int-Adv

Style: LA

Content: Styling

General Comment: A good video from Edie, showing much of what makes her be the famous 'SalsaFreak' and a good deal of very solid dance technique. In particularly enjoyed the second part of the video where some fundamentals of partnering technique is covered. A good video for students and instructors alike.

Hands Shines, Vol 1

Level: Int-Adv

Style: LA

Content: Styling and figures

General Comment: I was not sure what to expect from a video called 'Hand Shines'. It is a video about figures and hints on how to use hand flicks and hand drops. Apart for the slightly confusing title, this is a good video, as usual from Edie and Al. You will learn good technique about leading turns (preps) and hand drops and catches, about decorations you can add (both for ladies and guys) and a few nice patterns in which you can use what you learnt. As I wrote in other reviews, I am not a fan of LA style, so I am not too carried away by some of these moves, but if you like it you will be pleasantly impressed by the video. The quality of the dancing and instructions is something you can rely on, given the instructors. A worthwhile buy.

Intermediate Salsa, Vol 2

Level: Int

Style: LA

Content: Figures

General Comment: A set of intermediate level figures, in typical LA style, full of decorations, hand drops and spins. The format is similar to the other videos of the series. Good explanations from both Edie and AL and hints for decorating both the female and male part.
